On the subject of political novels, has anyone ever read a modern American political novel that was actually good? I know I haven't. Mostly they seem to stumble around, wallowing in scandal and poorly disguised commentary, until they come to unsatisfying endings. Unfair? Tell me how.

I know this post is old, but Jenn referred me to it. Interface, by Neal Stephenson and some guy who is not Neal Stephenson, much to his detriment, is pretty good, but it's not going to make any "best 100 books of all time" lists. Slightly but not too trashy. Not much scandal; as far as I can tell it makes no attempt to disguise any commentary it makes; the ending is classic unsatisfying Stephenson. Still, I enjoyed it. I don't know if you have an opinion on Stephenson at this point.
